About This Episode

Are authors about to be replaced by AI—or empowered by it?

In this episode of Talking Book Publishing, Kathleen Kaiser and Adanna Moriarty welcome publishing technology expert Thad McElroy to discuss the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence in the publishing industry. Thad shares the inspiration behind his book The AI Revolution in Book Publishing and explains how decades of technological change—from the rise of the internet to e-books and metadata—have shaped the current publishing landscape.

The conversation explores how the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 dramatically accelerated interest in AI and revealed its potential impact on every stage of the publishing process. Thad breaks down what AI means for authors, publishers, and the broader book ecosystem, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges of integrating AI tools into writing, editing, production, and marketing.

Listeners will gain insight into how AI may transform publishing workflows, what authors should understand about these technologies today, and how the industry may evolve in the coming years. If you’re an author, publisher, or publishing professional curious about how AI is shaping the future of books, this episode offers an accessible and thought-provoking overview
